Course Outcomes: 

Metabolism of Carbohydrates, Lipids and Proteins

Students will understand the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins in humans. They will be able to describe in structures and words the metabolism of sugars through the pathways of glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, and the electron transport chain.

Organic Functional Groups

Students will understand the structure and reactivity of organic functional groups, such as alcohols, aldehydes, carboxylic acids, and amides. For example, students will learn that aldehydes and ketones typically undergo addition reactions.

Biomolecules

Students will understand the structure and reactivity of the biomolecules that have those functional groups. For example, students will be able to demonstrate that carbohydrates are aldehydes and ketones that undergo addition reactions to form hemiacetals and polysaccharides with acetal linkages.
