1. Describe the functional behaviors of the primary classes of materials (metals, ceramics, polymers, composites).
2. Predict material properties based on atomic structure and defects.
3. Apply the lever rule to binary phase diagrams.
4. Model the stress-strain diagram and describe the mechanisms for altering it for the various classes of materials.
Diffusion, Nucleation and Growth
5. Describe the kinetics of diffusion and the process of nucleation and growth as they affect transformation products.
6. Describe common degradation and failure processes for each basic class of materials.
7. Identify functional requirements for real world scenarios and select an appropriate material based on those requirements, as well as economic, environmental, and societal impacts.
8. Document materials data in publication-quality graphical and tabular forms, and discuss the meaning of the data.
