Program Requirements

This major is designed to prepare students to teach in public schools. In order to graduate with this major, students are required to complete Utah State Office of Education licensing requirements. For students accepted into the major after August 1, 2014, grades below C in any required coursework in a teaching major or teaching minor will not be accepted. Teacher candidates must maintain a total GPA of 3.0 or higher throughout the program and to qualify for student teaching. For details on admission and retention requirements for teaching majors and teaching minors, see Educator Preparation Program (EPP) Requirements in the Undergraduate Catalog.
Requirement 2 Complete 5.0 hours from the following Courses
Note: FBI fingerprint and background clearance must be completed before enrolling in ARTED 276.
Obtain acceptance into the Art Education K-12 BA program.
Requirement 3 Complete 1 Course
First-year foundation course:

Second-year foundation courses:
Complete an interview with advisor.
Complete a teaching assistant experience. Must be approved by Tara Carpenter. Complete prior to student teaching. See Sharon Heelis for hiring. See Art Department secretary for finalization.
Contact Education Student Services, 350 MCKB, 801-422-3426, to schedule the final interview to clear your application for the secondary teaching license. You should be registered for your last semester at BYU prior to the scheduled appointment.
Requirement 12 Complete 12.0 hours from the following Courses
Student teachers/interns must complete three forms in their MyLink accounts (PIBS, CDS, FED) and attach their TWS to the MyLink account for their program. All four must be completed to be cleared for graduation.

Construct curricula and other professional materials that demonstrate and reflect current practices and theories in art and education.

Studio Practice

Develop a studio practice that connects to the student's identity as an art educator and that includes the breadth of media and skills required of art educators in schools.

Demonstrate sound teaching traits and practices in a variety of contexts.

Professional Licensure

Students will fulfill all professional licensure requirements and standards as required by the Art Education program, the McKay School of Education, and University Standards for Educational Preparation Programs.

Professional Licensure

Achieve all professional licensure requirements and standards as required by the Art Education program and the McKay School of Education including assessments of professional behavior Professional Dispositions Instrument (PDI), clinical evaulation(Clinical Practice Assessment System (CPAS), the Professional Teaching Portfolio, and the Teacher Work Sample (TWS). EPP candidates will meet the Utah Effective Teaching Standards (UETS) at the basic competency level.

Professional Licensure

Fulfill all professional licensure requirements and standards as required by the Art Education program and the McKay School of Education. EPP candidates will meet the Utah Effective Teaching Standards (UETS) at the basic competency level.

Spiritual Dimension of Art Education

Students will consider complex questions and personal responsibilities associated with art and education in the light of gospel principles and seek greater light and knowledge through their experiences as artists and teachers.
