Comparative Animal Physiology

Biology College of Life Sciences

Course Description

We will compare different animals' anatomical and physiological solutions to organismal needs (e.g., energy metabolism, sensory processes, reproduction, etc.) considering their different environments and evolutionary pressures.

Title

Compare and contrast species

Learning Outcome

Students will be able to compare and contrast the physiology of a wide variety of animal species and make inferences about their evolutionary relatedness.

Title

Relate structure to function

Learning Outcome

Students will be able to relate the structure of tissues, organs, and organ systems to their functions.

Title

Apply foundational principles

Learning Outcome

Students will be able to apply foundational principles of cellular biology and biochemistry from introductory biology to new contexts in animal physiology and identify emergent properties that arise from physiological systems.

Title

Propose hypotheses

Learning Outcome

Students will be able to popose hypotheses to explain physiological phenomena and draw conclusions from primary data.

Title

Predict changes

Learning Outcome

Students will be able to predict both short-term and long-term changes in animal physiology due to changing environments.
