Students will reflect on the words of the scriptures and the words of the living Prophet and Apostles to better understand how a Christlike person perceives and approaches people with dialectal differences and/or speech disorders.

Students will enhance their awareness of speech production through gaining a command of basic phonetics principles and terminology.

Basic Phonetic Transcription Skill

Learning Outcome

Students will accurately transcribe both typical and mildly disordered English speech samples using the International Phonetic Alphabet and its extensions.

Distinguishing Between Differences and Disorders

Learning Outcome

Student will demonstrate a beginning ability to appreciate and distinguish speech disorders from the speech differences that result from between-speaker variability (e.g., linguistic and cultural diversity) and within-speaker variability (e.g., register and context differences).
