Title

Understanding of social and structural factors

Learning Outcome

Students will gain awareness of the social and structural factors which influence health, healing, and illness. Particular emphasis is given to:  (1) influenc eof the social environment on health and illness; (2) health and illness behavior; (3) health care prasctitioners and their relationships with patients; and (4) the health care system.  Students will be introduced to the literature and be conversant regarding the primary social and structural factors influencing health and illness.

Learning Outcome

Students will debate a current topic related to the sociology of medicine which will require them to be conversant with the debate and develop oral presentation skills. In addition, students will research and present in written form a medical phenomenon in sociological terms.
