Course Description

This course focuses on concepts and projects dealing with the creation of characters, both realistic and imaginary. Using both traditional and digital techniques, students will apply appropriate artistic direction as practiced throughout the field of illustration.

Title

Visual Narrative Communication

Learning Outcome

Students will create characters and accoutrements that demonstrate a strong understanding of visual design, the influence of the story world or setting, and the relationship between form and function. Students will have the ability to visually communicate not just physical attributes but also cultural histories, personalities, attitudes, and motivations of characters.

Ideation, Research, and Reference

Learning Outcome

Students will apply their design process using sound practices of visual ideation, research, observation, and reference-gathering to design believable characters by combining reference with imagination. Students will cultivate a working knowledge of applic­able history, including fashion design, architecture, and culture.

Design Theory and Process

Learning Outcome

Students will be able to distinguish between the design processes of concept art and production illustration.  They will apply design principles such as shape, silhouette, gestalt, composition, color, pattern and texture to finish their illustrations at a professional level.

Art Direction and Stylistic Coherence

Learning Outcome

Students will understand and apply art direction in developing a coherent, appealing visual style for characters in a narrative environment. This will include direction and insight from clients, editors, and their peers.

Individual Vision and Professional Presentation

Learning Outcome

Students will develop an individual vision and style for a fictional story world as well as prepare and deliver a presentation for that world with its cast of characters and creatures. Students will learn to discuss and analyze peers' concepts to explore various approaches and improve methods.
