Students will understand the theoretical principles underlying the classification and description of English speech sounds and prosodic patterns of English.

Students will be able to use standard transcription systems to represent English speech sounds and discuss some of the limitations of those systems.

Students will be able to describe and analyze major features of the segmental and prosodic phonology of English.
