Course Description

Drawing methods and practices combined with compositional foundations for visual communicators. Students will develop observation and conceptual drawing skills. Students will also develop visual problem solving, analytical thinking, and craftsmanship by applying design principles to compositional problems. Skills are developed through intensive practice, lecture, demonstration, and critique.

Drawing as Visual Language

Learning Outcome

Students will be able to understand the elements and principles of design as applied to drawing practice and understand the concepts and terminology necessary to discuss visual ideas in meaningful ways. Students will also be able to analyze representational modes of visual communication.

Linear and Tonal Drawing Concepts

Learning Outcome

Students will be able to work from life in creating drawings that demonstrate a conceptual understanding of and practical proficiency in linear and tonal drawing methods. These include gesture, contour, sighting, and perspective construction, as well as an understanding of light to describe three-dimensional forms, surface materials, textures, and atmospheric effects.

Design Theory and Practice

Learning Outcome

Students will be able to demonstrate fluency in two-dimensional design theory by working through the ideation and iterative process. Fundamental design principles will be applied in compositional exercises ("thumbnails") focusing on unity, variety, balance, emphasis, rhythm etc.

Learning Outcome

Students will be able to exhibit enhanced visual perception, aesthetic sensitivity, good organization, craftsmanship, presentation and taste in design exercises, projects, and assignments.
