This course will help teacher candidates understand reading and writing development in children in grades K-6 and the implications and applications within an elementary classroom setting.

Foundational Knowledge

Learning Outcome

Teacher candidates will use foundational knowledge to design and implement instruction that develops a child's ability to write, spell, and use grammar effectively.

Language Arts Instruction and the Writing Process

Learning Outcome

Teacher candidates will plan and implement writing and language arts instruction and the writing process using whole class, small groups, and/or meeting with individual students, as needed.

Developmental Trajectories

Learning Outcome

Teacher candidates will attend to the developmental trajectories of students, including linguistic and cultural differences, to plan and implement writing and language arts instruction.

Learning Outcome

Teacher candidates will administer, score, and utilize a variety of assessments appropriate for use in screening, diagnostic, monitoring, and outcome writing and spelling assessment.
