The purpose of this course is for teacher candidates to understand the essential components of literacy including what they are, how they are expected to develop, how they relate to other concepts, and ways to support, teach, and assess this development for young children (prek-k)

Teacher candidates will demonstrate foundational knowledge of the essential components of literacy development for all learners (PreK-K) with understanding of how context, culture(s), experiences, and Gospel truths influence literacy learning.

Learning Outcome
Teacher candidates will implement a series of observations, small group lessons, and assessments to learn about the literacy development of young children and draw upon this data to determine strengths, areas of need, and ways to support literacy learning.

Teacher candidates will collaborate with colleagues and use a process of ongoing reflection to apply theory, Gospel insights, and research-based foundational knowledge of literacy development to the early literacy learning of young children.
