Create lessons that include objectives in content and language that correspond to subject/curriculum guidelines and student proficiency levels. Create select and modify curriculum and materials for use in immersion programs.

Learning Outcome

Manage the classroom in the immersion language making input comprehensible and sustaining a clear and consistent separation of languages. Scaffold activities to provide opportunities for student output in the immersion language and elicit specific language functions and forms.

Implement content (literacy math science social-studies culture etc.) and language instruction that demonstrates core immersion education teaching strategies and follows a gradual release from guided to independent practice that is then appropriately evaluated in a variety of ways.

Program Requirements

Licensure: This program meets the educational requirements designed to lead to an occupationally required professional license or certificate in the state of Utah. Students pursuing occupations requiring a license or certificate in a state other than Utah should contact the appropriate BYU academic advisement center as well as the licensing agency in the state where they intend to work to seek information and guidance regarding licensure and certification requirements.

This minor is designed to prepare students to teach in public schools. A teaching minor may only be received by students graduating with a teaching major. In order to graduate with this minor, students are required to complete Utah State Office of Education licensing requirements. For students accepted into the major after December 16, 2019, grades below C in any required coursework in a teaching major or teaching minor will not be accepted. Teacher candidates must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher once admitted into the program and to qualify for student teaching. Requirement 1 — Complete 2 Option

Complete the following prerequisites prior to declaring the minor:

Requirement 1.1 — Obtain confirmation from your advisement center that you have completed the following:

Be admitted to a teaching major. (This certifies that students have met state requirements for basic skills tests, GPA and grades in individual courses, and have passed a criminal background check, as per the policies of BYU's Educator Preparation Program.) Also, Pass an Oral Proficiency Interview with a rating of Advanced Mid or better.
